Easy Sugar Cookie Frosting (Printable)

A creamy sweet topping that dries beautifully. Easy to customize with colors and flavors.

# What You Need:

→ Base Frosting

01 - 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
02 - 2-3 tablespoons whole or 2% milk
03 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
04 - 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
05 - Pinch of salt

→ Optional Add-ins

06 - Food coloring, gel or liquid, as desired
07 - 1/2 teaspoon almond extract

# How-To Steps:

01 - In a medium mixing bowl, combine powdered sugar, softened butter, vanilla extract, and salt. Beat until well combined and mixture appears crumbly.
02 - Add milk 1 tablespoon at a time, beating thoroughly after each addition. Continue until smooth, spreadable consistency forms. Use less milk for piping stiffness or more milk for glazing consistency.
03 - Stir in almond extract if using. Add food coloring drop by drop, mixing thoroughly until color is evenly distributed throughout frosting.
04 - Frost cooled sugar cookies immediately. Let cookies rest at room temperature for minimum 1 hour to allow frosting surface to set completely.

# Helpful Tips:

01 -
  • The glossy finish dries perfectly so stacked cookies will not stick together
  • You can adjust the consistency for thick piping or thin glazing with the same recipe
02 -
  • Add the milk slowly because you can always add more but you cannot take it back once the frosting gets too thin
  • The frosting will thicken slightly as it sits, so make it a little thinner than your final target consistency
03 -
  • Frost completely cooled cookies or the frosting will melt and slide right off the warm surface
  • Keep leftover frosting covered with plastic wrap directly touching the surface to prevent a hard crust from forming
